Forlaget om boka:
Science’s most intriguing questions answered by the web’s favourite writer, the genius behind xkcd.com. Munroe’s hilarious and compelling answers explain everything from the odds of meeting your one true soulmate to how many humans a rampaging T-Rex would need to eat a day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Har du noen gang lurt på hva som skjer om hele menneskeheten samles og står tett i tett, for så å hoppe og lande samtidig? Eller hvordan det i realiteten hadde vært om hvert menneske faktisk bare hadde én sjelefrende? Eller hva som hadde skjedd med en person dersom alt DNA-et hans plutselig forsvant? Eller hva som hadde skjedd med Mars om vi tok alt vannet fra havene på jorda og slapp det på hodet til Curiosity Rover? Eller hvor lang tid det hadde tatt for to udødelige mennesker å finne hverandre hvis de startet på motsatt side av en planet som ligner Jorda?
Om ikke annet, lurer du kanskje på noe av dette nå…?
Frykt ikke. Gjennom spalten What If? svarer tegneserieskaperen og tidligere NASA-ansatt Randall Munroe på hypotetiske og mer eller mindre absurde spørsmål som sendes inn fra lesere som lurer. Om du bare er litt geeky har du garantert sett stripene hans rundt omkring, selv om du aldri har besøkt hjemmesiden, som forøvrig er utstyrt med følgende:
Warning: this comic occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors).
Her er noen eksempler:
Jeg skal ikke skryte på meg å skjønne alle vitsene (graden min er tross alt i kultur og samfunn), men jeg kan kaste bort ganske mye tid på å bla igjennom arkivet hans og le (som for eksempel nå, når jeg bare skulle lime inn noen eksempler her). Jeg har også fulgt med på What if?-spalten, og måtte selvsagt ha boka.
Folk lurer på mye rart. Folk som Munroe tar seg tid til å svare på det – og illustrere i tillegg. Jeg tror kanskje noe av det morsomste med denne boka var «Weird (and worrying) questions». Når du ber folk sende inn «hva hvis»-scenarioer, så kommer det virkelig noen rare – og bekymringsverdige – spørsmål.
weird-and-worrying
weird-and-worrying2
Munroe har tidvis en tendens til å svare seg ganske langt bort fra det originale spørsmålet. Av og til ender han et helt annet sted enn det som opprinnelig ble spurt om, men det skjer gjerne i de tilfellene svaret enten er at det er umulig, eller at det er umulig å svare på (på grunn av for mange variabler, manglende tilgjengelig informasjon, osv). Dette er på den ene siden interessant, men på den annen side kan det bli litt i meste laget her og der. Dette var ikke en sånn type bok jeg kunne lese fra perm til perm. Jeg tok heller frem boka nå og da, og leste et eller flere spørsmål før jeg la den fra meg igjen. Men det er helt greit, ikke misforstå.
Jeg kan ikke annet enn å berømme Munroe for både kreativitet og kunnskap. Ikke bare klarer han å svare på disse gæærne hypotetiske situasjonene, men han gjør det med humor og på en lettfattet måte som gjør at «liberal arts majors» også kan klare å henge med i svingene. Han skriver underholdende, og det er fullt mulig å lære en hel del av å lese boka – selv om situasjonene beskrevet er absurde.
Julegave til favorittnerden din, kanskje? Jeg tror det.
Not for the first time, I was inspired by the Norwegian Snapchat account, @snaplioteket. This time I discovered Junji Ito's Uzumaki. The blurb: Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but a pattern: UZUMAKI, the spiral - the hypnotic secret shape of the world. #uzumaki #spirals #junjiito #newbook #bookhaul #manga #literature #litteratur #skrekk #horror #coffee #cofferporn #bookporn #lesetips #nrklesetips #bokorm #bookworm #lesehest #bookstagram #bookish #instabook
I recently picked up Autonomous by Annalee Newitz. Not started reading it yet, but I was intrigued by the blurb: "Autonomous features a rakish female pharmaceutical pirate named Jack who traverses the world in her own submarine. A notorious anti-patent scientist who has styled herself as a Robin Hood heroine fighting to bring cheap drugs to the poor, Jack’s latest drug is leaving a trail of lethal overdoses across what used to be North America—a drug that compels people to become addicted to their work. On Jack’s trail are an unlikely pair: an emotionally shut-down military agent and his partner, Paladin, a young military robot, who fall in love against all expectations. Autonomous alternates between the activities of Jack and her co-conspirators, and Elias and Paladin, as they all race to stop a bizarre drug epidemic that is tearing apart lives, causing trains to crash, and flooding New York City." #autonomous #annaleenewitz #books #bøker #book #sciencefiction #scifi #newbook #litteratur #literature #bookhaul #bookish #bookstagram #instabook #booknerd #bookcoverlove #coverlove #orange #lesetips #nrklesetips #lesehest #bokorm #bookworm #nybok
I recently realised that it's been about 17 years since I read The Lord of the Rings. I recently went to Ireland (Dublin to be specific) for a conference. At the airport on my way home I picked up this quirky book. I ended up spending 12 hours travelling that day, due to delays and missing connecting flights (yes, ended up being plural, I missed two of them). For context, a direct flight takes about 2 hours. So that was fun. Didn't get a chance to start The Curious History of Irish Dogs, but I did read another one from start to finish. #thecurioushistoryofirishdogs #davidblakeknox #book #books #bøker #bok #litteratur #literature #bookhaul #newbook #dublin #ireland #irishwolfhound #avocado #tea #breakfast #nonfiction #bookstagram #instabook #bookish #lesehest #lesetips #nrklesetips #bokorm #bookworm
I have looked at and picked up this book in @outlandkirkegata for literal years. But I haven't bought it until now. I have absolutely no idea why. But here it is: A Natural History of Dragons - A Memoir by Lady Trent, by Marie Brennan. Looking forward to reading it. I finished listening to I'll Be Gone In The Dark, by Michelle McNamara, who tragically died suddenly while working on this book. I picked this book for the prompt "a book published posthumously" in the #Popsugarreadingchallenge, so I'm off to a good start! If you're into true crime, you'll most likely enjoy this book. The crime writer Michelle McNamara became somewhat obsessed with hunting down the Golden State Killer - in fact, she was the one who coined that name. Before this, he was known under various other nicknames: The East Area Rapist, East Bay Rapist, The Original Night Stalker, Visalia Ransacker and The Diamond Knot Killer. He killed at least 13 people, raped more than 50 girls and women from 13 to 40 years old, and committed more than 100 burglaries while he was active between 1974 and 1986. This book is really as much about McNamara as it is about the Golden State Killer, because so much of her life revolved around bringing him to justice. And in 2018, not long after this book was released, Joseph James DeAngelo was arrested based on DNA evidence, using the method McNamara describes as the best method to catch him. It saddens me that she wasn't around to see him caught, but, as her husband and friends say, she did not care about getting any credit. She cared about getting justice for all of his victims. Good book, well worth a read or listen! #illbegoneinthedark #michellemcnamara #truecrime #goldenstatekiller #eastarearapist #eastbayrapist #originalnightstalker #visaliaransacker #diamondknotkiller #litteratur #literature #book #audiobook #audible #lesetips #nrklesetips #lesehest #bokorm #bookworm #crime #krim #nonfiction #sakprosa #bookstagram #instabook #bookish
Happy New Year, friends! I've been in a bit of a reading slump for, well, the last couple of years really. I'll give a reading challenge a go in 2019, to see if that helps. @popsugar have been making these since 2015, I believe, and I quite like them. Don't know if I'll complete it, but as far as reading prompts go, these seem pretty good! I recently discovered Fatale through a Norwegian Snapchat account about books (@snaplioteket). I instantly ordered the first 4 issues. This one peaked my interest right from the beginning. Currently reading my first Nora Roberts novel. She's one of those authors whose name I've stumbled across regularly (obviously, as she has written more than 200 books), but never really been interested in checking out. Her most common genre, romance, isn't my cup of tea. But when I saw this book, Shelter in Place, I figured I'd give it a go. It's a story about the aftermath of a mass shooting in a mall. Not a romance novel. We follow a bunch of characters as they try to cope with what happened to them. Tangled up in this is a sort of crime thriller situation. I'm enjoying it so far! #shelterinplace #noraroberts #book #books #literature #litteratur #lesetips #lesehest #bokorm #bookworm #currentlyreading #kindle #kindlepaperwhite #ereader #bookstagram #instabook #thriller #ebook #reading #lesernå
