En smakebit på søndag: The Day of the Triffids

The Day of the Triffids.

Uansett… dette er vaskeseddelen på denne science fiction-klassikeren: When Bill Masen wakes up blindfolded in hospital there is a bitter irony in his situation. Carefully removing his bandages, he realizes that he is the only person who can see: everyone else, doctors and patients alike, have been blinded by a meteor shower. Now, with civilization in chaos, the triffids – huge, venomous, large-rooted plants able to ‘walk’, feeding on human flesh – can have their day. The Day of the Triffids, published in 1951, expresses many of the political concerns of its time: the Cold War, the fear of biological experimentation and the man-made apocalypse. However, with its terrifyingly believable insights into the genetic modification of plants, the book is more relevant today than ever before.

Og smakebiten? Den skal dere få fra første side:

When a day that you happen to know is Wednesday starts off by sounding like Sunday, there is something seriously wrong somewhere.
I felt that from the moment I woke. And yet, when I started functioning a little more sharply, I misgave. After all, the odds were that it was I who was wrong, and not everyone else – though I did not see how that could be. I went on waiting, tinged with doubt. But presently I had my first bit of objective evidence – a distant clock struck what sounded to me just like eight. I listened hard and suspiciously. Soon another clock began, on a loud, decisive note. In a leisurely fashion it gave an indisputable eight. Then I knew things were awry.

The League of Regrettable Superheroes by Jon Morris is a fun look at superheroes who never made it into the big leagues. Some of them missed their chance simply because they just vanished in the crowd, but others were downright weird. Ever heard of Doll Man? Jigsaw? Fatman the Human Flying Saucer..? #bøker #books #bok #reading #lesehest #bokorm #bookworm #leseglede #lesetips #nrklesetips #boktips #bookish #instabook #bookstagram #litteratur #literature #bookporn #superhero #jonmorris #theleagueofregrettablesuperheroes #lootcrate #comics #comicbooks #tegneserie In celebration of being completely done with this year's Christmas shopping: here is an unrelated shelfie. I'm not actually giving away any books this year. I know. It's sad.

I've seen this book around for a while, and finally decided to pick it up - even though it seems to be slightly outside what I usually read. The Wrath & The Dawn by Renée Ahdieh. Have you read it? What did you think?

Every Anxious Wave by Mo Daviau. It's being described as "High fidelity with time travel". I was intrigued.

Here's the publisher's description: Good guy Karl Bender is a thirty-something bar owner whose life lacks love and meaning. When he stumbles upon a time-travelling worm hole in his closet, Karl and his best friend Wayne develop a side business selling access to people who want to travel back in time to listen to their favorite bands. It's a pretty ingenious plan, until Karl, intending to send Wayne to 1980, transports him back to 980 instead. Though Wayne sends texts extolling the quality of life in tenth century "Mannahatta," Karl is distraught that he can't bring his friend back.

Enter brilliant, prickly, overweight astrophysicist, Lena Geduldig. Karl and Lena's connection is immediate. While they work on getting Wayne back, Karl and Lena fall in love -- with time travel, and each other. Unable to resist meddling with the past, Karl and Lena bounce around time. When Lena ultimately prevents her own long-ago rape, she alters the course of her life and threatens her future with Karl.

I've not posted for a couple of weeks, and the main reason for that is that I'm doing #NaNoWriMo this year. If you don't know what that is: November is the month when thousands of people set out to write a novel (each...). 50000 words in 30 days. 1667 words a day.

I have hit the halfway mark (25000 words) a couple of days early, and have only failed to hit the daily minimum once. I'm vaguely optimistic that I might in fact get through this madness. 👍I can assure you that I have made a few of the mistakes listed in the book in the picture though!

Tarjei Vesaas is of course also one of Norway's greatest authors, probably the most famous for his novel Is-slottet (The Ice Palace). The Black Horses, as seen in the photo, was first published in 1928.

Thank you!

It's a somewhat weird novella about a guy talking about a particular author and the books she has written. I'm not entirely sure what to say about it. Certainly a strange read... #bythesameauthor #jackrobinson #shakespeareandco #book #bøker #books #bok #reading #lesehest #bokorm #bookworm #leseglede #lesetips #nrklesetips #boktips #bookish #instabook #bookstagram #litteratur #literature #bookporn #signedbook #novella #shortstory #novelle New book!
